5 Favorite News Readers: 2 - BlogBridge

by Des Walsh on June 30th, 2007

BlogBridge offers itself as more than a feed aggregator, styling itself as “the ultimate info-junkie system”.

BlogBridge project leader Pito Salas and his team describe themselves as “a bunch of entrepreneurs / enthusiasts who enjoy living at the edge of technology and social behavior.”

Unlike some other popular feed readers, such as NewsGator Online which was reviewed in the first post in this series, BlogBridge is not a Web service. You need to download the software and install it on your computer. If you are travelling and finding it a challenge to get online, as was my experience this week past, that can be a drag. On the other hand, if a Web service you rely on has an outage, you still have all your data - up the time of the outage - accessible.

BlogBridge is an Open Source product, so for those so inclined and appropriately skilled there is the opportunity for some customization.

For me the main attraction is the way the information is organised and displayed. It’s easy to create categories of blogs and drop new feeds into the respective categories. I can scan very quickly the blogs and posts I want to check out and then either display a post within the reader or click on the permalinked post title to open the blog in question at the relevant post.

The BlogBridge site also has a lot of information and some great lists of top blogs under various categories, such as politics, to save you time and effort in finding blogs relevant to your interests and in creating your own lists from scratch.

There are specialised services available for a fee but membership of BlogBridge and the downloadable reader are free.

I also like the human touch. I like the fact that if a member has a challenge then Pito, or Alexey or another member of the team is going to care and going to do their best to help you solve it. After all, they, like us the members, are all info-junkies too!

Update July 4, 2007: Pito Salas has pointed me to the following screenshot as a more up to date representation of BlogBridge -
