Blogging Can Be a Career, As Long As You’re Prepared to Work Hard
I’m sure I’m not the only blogger in the world who is pleased today to hear about the writeup of Read/WriteWeb’s Richard McManus, in New Zealand’s Dominion Post.
Under the heading Hobby leads to career for tech blogger, journalist Reuben Schwarz writes of how, from Richard’s home office in Lower Hutt (pop. 97,700), New Zealand, Richard has taken his blog to international prominence - ranked 28th in the world.
I heard Richard speak last month in Sydney, at a Web 2.0 seminar. He was very impressive in the authority and perceptiveness of his observations, as well as being impressively unpretentious.
As his post today on the newspaper story shows, he is not displeased with the recognition. He comments that he’s not sure blogging was ever a “hobby” for him - rather an extension of his career. He reiterates his comment to the Dominion Post, that there has been a lot of hard work in achieving the success he now enjoys.
So really, it took 3 whole years for Read/WriteWeb to go from ‘hobby’ to full-time job. The bottom line: blogging is a very difficult, and highly competitive, way to make a living.
That other well-known Antipodean blogging success story, Darren Rowse of ProBlogger and one of the owners of b5media, has also posted on this story today, backing up Richard’s comments on the hard work needed to achieve their level of blogging success.
