Business and Blogging Bookshelf: Blog Wild! A Guide for Small Business Blogging

(www.businessandblogging.com) Andy Wibbels’ blog has been a favorite resource of mine for some time. When I managed to get my hands on a copy of his book, Blog Wild! A Guide For Small Business Blogging, I was determined to review it for the Business and Blogging readers.

One of the questions about blogging that a lot of small business owners struggle with is: Where Do I Start?

Andy’s book does a really good job of answering that question. It takes you step-by-step through the process of creating a business blog. The book addresses basic questions that a small business owner might ask such as:

  • What Is a Blog?
  • How a Blog Works
  • Should I Have a Website or Blog?
  • Choosing a Blog Platform
  • How To Publish Your First Post

Another strong point of the book is that it is a really quick read. It’s short (only 161 pages, not including the index and glossary). Most chapters are less than four pages long. I was able to read the book in a single afternoon!

One difference that I would have with Andy is that he recommends Typepad. Because he recommends Typepad he devotes the last 70 pages (or so) of the book to specific Typepad instructions.

While I think that Typepad is a fine blogging tool, I personally prefer WordPress installed on your own domain. Readers who don’t use Typepad may be tempted to skip the second half of the book, which is a shame because there’s some other nuggets of wisdom in there (such as the chapter on “What Is a Feed and How Does It Work?”).

One thing to keep in mind is that this book is geared towards beginning bloggers. If you’ve already got a blog up and running, then you may find this book to be too basic for your needs. However, if you’re a small business owner who is about to start blogging, then this book is a great place to start.

About Business and Blogging Bookshelf - From time to time, Liz and I will review a book about business blogging and include a review here. Together, we’ll help you grow your business blogging library.

    Hi Rich!

I’m glad that you enjoyed Andy’s site. The book is good, but basic. I’d definitely hand it to someone who was just getting started.
