Business Blogging: Do Fashion Stores Blog?

(www.businessandblogging.com) Well the rain held off long enough for us to see the Macy’s fireworks display last night. As the world’s largest fireworks display - it more than lived up to our expectations - over 35,000 fireworks in a 30 minute show- that’s more than 1000 fireworks a minute!

After the show I began to wonder about Macy’s department store - the force behind the fireworks and the NY Thanksgiving Day parade.  With all the money and effort they put into their marketing and public relations - I was sure they’d have a blog.

But - no dice.

Nor did Bloomingdales, also owned by Macy’s Inc.

And neither did Lord&Taylor, Barney’s, Ann Taylor, Neiman-Marcus, Saks-Fifth Avenue  or Bergdorf Goodman’s.

Nordstrom’s however has a blog -   From the Floor.  Four Nordstrom employees (Kim, Lisa, Jorge and Debbi) take turns blogging about Beauty, Designer, Events, Men’s, Shoes and Trends.  The blog has been in existence for about 8 months and seems to be updated regularly with engaging posts that appeal to their target market - shoppers - as well as some personal reflections such as one blogger’s reaction to Sex and the City.

As much as I enjoy the Macy’s annual fireworks and parade (and don’t want them to stop!!), I’m not sure they’re going to  motivate me to go shopping any time soon.

Wouldn’t a blog that describes new items in the store be more enticing to recession-wary shoppers???

Liz — I am also shocked that more department stores aren’t blogging. Especially the big ones with staff web writers, etc!! Hope you’re having a good weekend. (I have never seen the fireworks in NYC — it is crowded enough here in Chicago!!)

    Hi Amy

I agree - blogging seems like a natural fit with department stores. Hopefully more will catch on to this opportunity soon!

    Enjoy your weekend!

    Hi Liz,

That does come as a surprise, I’ve seen increasing trend of fashion related blogs and I thought it would have caught on to retailers!

    Hi Nabeel

I have to believe that it is just a matter of time - blogging seems like such a natural fit with fashion and retail.

I notice that your blog is currently under revision and is offline - let me know when it is back - I’d be interested in reading it.
