Business Blogging Tip: Teamwork
In previous posts, we’ve discussed the intellectual and physical demands of blogging. While I still tend to believe that neither of these is overwhelming for the average business owner or corporate employee, I do think there is another challenge of blogging which can get in the way of success - the time commitment involved.
Blogging can be time consuming. It requires an ongoing commitment to post consistently over long periods of time.
Several tactics we’ve mentioned before include scheduling posts ahead, alternating pictures or videos among the written posts, and using guest bloggers to write posts.
Another tactic which is used quite successfully at several blogs in b5media is to have co-authors on blogs.
Many corporate blogs use this approach as well. I recommend it for small businesses whenever it is possible.
There are several advantages to having co-authors for blogs.
1) The most obvious is that it reduces the workload. At businessandblogging, we post once per day. If just one of us was writing the blog, we’d have to write 7 days per week, 365 days per year. That could get to be a bit much. With two authors, we can post every other day, cutting our individual commitments in half. We can also swap days or fill in for each other in times of emergency. Even if we don’t do this often, it is reassuring knowing that it is there.
2) A less obvious advantage is that having two authors is intellectually stimulating. Having to write the blog by yourself can be draining. It can be hard to continually come up with new ideas. Having a partner means that we are both contributing ideas and topics. We inspire each other and keep our creativity fresh.
3) Another less obvious advantage is the sense of community and partnership that comes with sharing a blog. Similar to parenting a child, there is no one else who cares quite so passionately about their well-being as the other parent. Laura and I both feel a commitment to the blog and this creates a strong bond around this shared passion.
Any businessowner knows that the key to success is to keep their employees engaged. A key to engagement is a feeling of connection and creativity. By allowing your employees to partner on a blog (or partner with you on the blog), you will increase their engagement and satisfaction. This will lead to increased creativity and productivity.
That type of enthusiasm and energy will in turn reach your readers and your customers. Your blog will be much more effective when the people who are writing it are excited and passionate about the topic.
How can you share the ownership of your business blog? What worries would keep you from doing it?

Team blogging is great!
When I took over blogging for our company I asked for a team. So I have bloggers from marketing, product development, customer service, editorial/documentation, management and after a “lunch and learn” I’ll have someone in the accounting/HR department as well.
This allows us to have a steady flow of posts from all different aspects of the company.
My only job is to prod them to make sure they blog on their days. ;)

Hi Chelle
That’s one of the things I noticed about your blog - the variety of good posters and different perspectives - keeps it fresh and the energy high!

I enjoy co-blogging with you for many of the reasons that you mention here.

Perfect timing. I just volunteered to be a part of a community blog. Different categories were created and each of us can write in any category we see fit.
