BusinessWeek Updates Classic Article on Blogs to Include Social Media

(www.businessandblogging.) Three years ago, BusinessWeek made a prediction that was ahead of its time: Blogs Will Change Your Business.

They were right, of course, although most companies are just now waking up to the real power of blogs. Even BusinessWeek probably didn’t realize at the time just how right they were.

(Although not all of their specific predictions about particular blogs came true. You’ll see what I mean when you look at their update.)

That’s why when BusinessWeek updated their classic article this week to include social media, I took notice.

The BusinessWeek article provides a fun and fascinating look back at what many thought business blogging would become and also at which predictions about blogging came true and which did not. (To see the updates in the article, click on the blue circles next to the highlighted words.)

By the way, BusinessWeek is absolutely right that social media should be part of the mix. (In fact, I’d like to see them follow this article with a more detailed and specific article on social media.)

Social media and blogging have become inextricably linked as a means of building an online presence for a company, or an individual. The link is so strong that many organizations, like the Red Cross, have an actual position like community manager or social media integrator to handle the organization’s online presence.

In fact, the business world is now standing at a crossroads with social media just as they did a few years ago with blogging. Will they adopt it, or will they fall behind?
A post on the businesses benefits of Web 2.0 from ComputerWeekly.com points out how companies are increasingly turning to social media for their business needs. In fact, according to the article, one airline is using Facebook to manage their crew’s schedules.

Along with blogging, social media promises to impact businesses in a huge way. Savvy companies, are already trying to build social networks onto their corporate sites. (Look for more on that development in future posts.)
