Can Blogging See Your Business Through The Recession?

by Laura Spencer on May 17th, 2008

saving money for recessionThe first temptation that many small businesses face during a recession is to cut back on the marketing budget. In today’s environment, that might mean cutting back on your business blog.

The reasoning goes something like this: if you can’t see immediate results from an expenditure, then it is expendable.

My advice to you about cutting back on your business blog: Don’t do it!

Here’s three reasons why you should continue with your business blog even when things get tight:

  1. Blogging has a relatively low start-up cost compared to other forms of marketing and advertising. It’s a simple matter of getting more bang for the buck. Plus, with blogging you have complete (or nearly complete) control of your medium.
  2. Blogging is cumulative. As you continue to promote your blog and build community the exposure that your company gets from blogging will only increase.
  3. Blogging is timeless. While this month’s print ad may be thrown away next month, last week’s post will be out there promoting your company for months (and possibly even years).

Over at Business Blog Consulting, Rich Brooks has built up a good argument for blogging being recession proof that is worth reading.

Is your business feeling the recession yet? Have you been flirting with giving up blogging to save money?

Don’t do it!

Blog your way through the recession instead.

Laura, that’s a trap most businesses, both large and small can fall into quite easily: the strategic vs. tactical view of expenditures. Far too often we seek immediate returns over long-term benefits, to our eventual detriment.

Doing something, not for now, but for the future, is good thinking, and if done well, always pays off!

    Thanks Robert!

I’m glad that you can see the long-term benefits of blogging. Hopefully, other businesses will too.
