Cool Prizes for Work Pimps
My b5media colleagues Tris Hussey and Scot Herrick have a very lively blog called Pimp Your Work. I admit that, not being North American, I could not say I was really clear on what that meant. And the subtitle, “Putting some shizzle into your work … and making your work day better” was only marginally helpful. “Shizzle”? Dare I ask?
But I wanted to understand better, especially as Tris and Scot are having a competition and I wanted to help spread the word. Their blog post announcing the competition is It’s a pimpalicious Pimp Your Work contest! You can win cool stuff, easy. There was that word again, in a couple of forms. Clearly I needed to get some clarification, if not for the sake of readers unfamiliar with the finer (?) nuances of North American slang, then at least for my own sake.
So I asked Tris for some clarification and this is what he wrote:
Any way to pimp your work or ride or computer is to make it better, cooler, slicker… in our case it’s a metaphor for the changes you can make to make your work better. An Excel trick or effective meeting management technique.
Think, take what is ordinary, boring or tedious into something amazing, efficient, and exciting.
Tris passed on trying to explain “shizzle” except to say it’s like “cool”.
Interesting. And Scot explained that pimping your work (or your car etc) means “making something much better than it was”.
Ok, so what about the competition? Here’s the key section from the post on the subject:
