Excellent Introduction to RSS

by Des Walsh on August 16th, 2007

Last month I posted a series on Favorite Feed Readers - including specifically NewsgatorOnline, Bloglines, BlogBridge, Google Reader and FeedDemon.

For those who haven’t even got to having a favorite feed reader or perhaps even knowing what a feed reader is, I recommend Martin Neumann’s excellent new Beginners’ Guide to RSS. He kindly references my series as mentioned above, but I’d decided the guide was worth posting about before I got to that bit.

I like particularly his comments on at least one of the key reasons for business people to be interested in and use RSS, especially in small business:

I see small business life in 2007 this way: it’s all about knowledge and information. We all want to know more than the next guy and in business, a real competitive advantage can be had just by being more knowledgeable than your competition.

As a business owner, you’re run off your feet with a million things to do. The last thing you want to do is to waste hours scouring the web to be kept up to date in your industry. And that’s where RSS is your savior.

The guide is written ostensibly for Australians, as Martin is on a bit of a campaign to get Aussies to make more use of RSS. But Americans and others should not let that put them off checking out the guide. It’s application is universal.

It works even for people who don’t like to read blocks of text, as it includes links to some excellent video explaining/showing how RSS functions.

And if you know it all, this is the guide to send people to when they ask, just what is this RSS of which you speak?
