For Gen Y, Does “Blogging”=”MySpace”?

by Des Walsh on February 23rd, 2007

One of the main sessions at ad:tech Sydney a couple of weeks ago featured an expert panel whose members were a lot younger than those on the other panels. The panel was there to help the audience understand how young people respond to various attempts by advertisers and marketers to reach and influence them via digital media. The three panel members were 17-18.

For me and I sensed for a lot of others in the audience, one of the most striking pieces of information was that these young people spend a lot of time on MySpace and that is kind of their default “location” online.

Then yesterday, speaking with the owner of a local coffee shop where a bunch of us had just had a breakfast time instant seminar, and discovering they did not have a website, I started to speak to her about blogging, as I do.

Although she herself was quite young, she had never heard of blogging. I pointed to the 16-17 old assistant next to her and said - he knows. Then to him “you know what a blog is, don’t you?”

Answer: “Yeah, MySpace”.

How’s that for some branding of the blogosphere for a generation?

It isn’t just a generation, people fail to realize that a lot of people aren’t blog savvy but that is really the arrogance of the blogging world. Myspace is viewed as a one stop shop for many and it encompasses everything they want on the net, including a large number of technophobs.

There are tons of adults on myspace and the demographics of adults versus teens is actually way closer than most people think. People like to assume it is for teens and slam it before really understanding the demographics of the site.

Well caught, Kevin. I had heard that there is that wider demographic. My personal view is that “blogging” will soon have morphed into whatever is the next generic term for online communication, social media etc, hopefully before too many of the non-blogsavvy will need to go through learning all the bloggy stuff in order to communicate.

I have a MySpace blog, one that I rarely visit, but it does serve a purpose. Wiht MySpace, you do get visited by a lot of folks who only want to be “your friend” while the other blogging platforms are less community related.

Excellent marketing on MySpace’s part continues to keep this community front and center.

[…] In a blog last month about Generation Y and Blogging, Des Walsh shows his age when he writes about MySpace. First off, in an ad:tech session led by a panel of teenagers, he writes, “one of the most striking pieces of information was that these young people spend a lot of time on MySpace and that is kind of their default ‘location’ online.” […]
