How To Get Bloggers Talking About You Pt. 2

by Liz Fuller on April 24th, 2008

In my last post I discussed ways to get bloggers talking about you - assuming you don’t have a blog.

But what if you do have a blog and it still appears that no one is paying attention?

Much like my advice for business owners who don’t blog - my advice for bloggers is to remember that you are part of a community.

To paraphrase John Donne - No Blog is an Island.

When you blog, you are blogging as part of a conversation.  It is very much like networking at any social event:  to get anything out of it - you have to interact with others - otherwise you are just standing in a corner talking to yourself!

So, how do you break into the conversation?

  • Post meaningful content on a regular basis. Seriously, don’t just copy other people’s articles, or post erratically. This is akin to attending a networking event and then never saying anything at all. Or only repeating what you’ve heard other people say.  Basically, it’s boring and makes it difficult for others to form any impression of you.
  • Comment on other blogs and forums.  You can’t sit around waiting for others to start conversations with you.  Start them yourself. Add interesting observations. Move the conversation along - don’t just say “I agree” or “Great post”.  Take the time to say something thoughtful and sincere.
  • Submit your posts to carnivals.  This is similar to giving a presentation at a networking event.  It enables you to showcase your thoughts and talents. It draws other people to you so that they are more likely to notice you and initiate conversations with you.
  • Link to posts written by other bloggers. In this way you introduce your readers to bloggers you enjoy. It enables them to develop more connections. They appreciate the exposure and will often return the favor on your blog. You both increase your circle of friends and influence.

So - if you have a blog - it all comes down to this - the best way to get other bloggers to talk about you - is to talk about them first!!

    Great ideas!
This is, for instance, my first comment on this blog of yours… just because I found interesting content in here!
    Keep going :-)

I have begun advising my clients that have asked about blogging that it really is a commitment. I have even gone so far as to playfully tell them, “Think about what you would tell your child when they want to get a pet - that it’s a commitment that needs to be nurtured for a long time. Unless you’re truly ready for that commitment, then perhaps you should hold off until you are.”

I’m not trying to persuade them away from blogging, but I am trying to save them from possibly annoying their potential audience if I believe they will start strong only to abandon the project for “the next big thing.”

    Thanks Robert!

There is some time involved with blogging, and that amount varies depending on the size of the company and the industry.

Another question to ask them is: would you rather your customer found your blog or your competitor’s?

    Hi Simone!

Thanks for your comment. It’s always great to “meet” a reader. I hope that we’ll see a lot of you.

Hi Laura, Hi Liz - wanna be blog friends? (Grin)
Actually, I love networking and joining in on meaningful conversation on a range of topics! It’s not only that a post moves me to comment, but also makes a point that I support, never thought of or has me thinking in another light.

I’ve heard of carnivals, but haven’t joined one yet. I’m researching that one…now!

    Hi Lisa

Glad you felt moved to comment! Let me know if you want help researching some carnivals - you have really interesting and unique info on your blog! (I’m still reeling over your article saying toddlers need to hear 17,000 words per day!! I get tired just thinking about it!!)

    :)

@Simone - so glad you decided to comment - that makes me feel good - and I’m glad you’re part of our community!

@Robert - that is such a great analogy - blogs being akin to having a pet! You need to feed and water it and clean up after it - and on a daily basis or else it’s going to starve or get sick! On the other hand - just like taking a dog for a walk - a blog is a great way to meet new people and make new friends!
