Interactive Webinar on Search with John Battelle

by Des Walsh on April 24th, 2007

My post yesterday on feeds was triggered by an invitation I had received to a webinar with John Battelle.

The event is billed as: Search as the next interface - a conversation with John Battelle.

John Battelle is an entrepreneur, journalist, professor, author and currently founder and chairman of Federated Media Publishing. He writes lucidly, explaining technical matters clearly, which makes me confident that the session will be informative even for me as a non-expert.

The blurb for the event says:

Battelle argues that search is the axis of a revolution in how we interact with computing technology; that search is moving from its command line approach to one that feels more like a dialog. But how do we get there, and what issues arise along the way - privacy, trust, intellectual property rights? And what are the business models implicit in this new world - a world of conversational media?

The promise is:

In this very interactive session you can ask John questions about the latest trends, issues or what he thinks about Google’s recent DoubleClick acquisition.

I like interactive. I like “very interactive” even more. Especially as for a lot of calls like this I have to get up at a very early hour and can’t see the point of that if all I’m doing is listening to a lecture, which I would rather listen to when I’m fully awake. Tip: if you are doing international teleconferences or webinars which require some people to stay up very late or get up very early, make it worth their while by being properly interactive - not just one of those presenter + straight person duologues that masquerade as interactive. I understand there are logistics when there are thousands of participants, but with the technology available it is possible to invite and respond to questions on the fly.

Fortunately, the Battelle event is at 6 am my time, which is when I’m up anyway.

It’s on April 25th, at 1 pm US Pacific time. Which for me and other Australians will actually be April 26th.

In this post he talks about the event and invites questions, via the comments. He offers these suggestions to get people started:

  • What’s the future interface for search?
  • Can Yahoo pull even or ahead of Google?
  • Will Microsoft buy its way in?
  • The Doubleclick deal - good or bad or indifferent?
  • Privacy and data use - discuss!

Several comments/questions there as I write.
