Internet Addiction, Is Growing Dependency Blogging’s Dirty Little Secret?
(www.businessandblogging.com) Prominent blogger, Michael Stelzner of Writing White Papers wrote about the “dark side” of blogging over a year ago.
Yes, he was talking about addiction. Internet (blogging) addiction, to be specific.
Now others are talking about it too.
Over at the canyon, a blog for the treatment of addiction and other mental illnesses, they’re asking the question Is Internet Addiction the Socially Acceptable Drug of the 21st Century?
Last year Daily Blog Tips posted this humorous quiz asking readers to test their blogging addiction.
But, real addiction isn’t funny or humorous. In fact, it’s a disaster that interferes with the addict’s ability to function.
Earlier this year, Liz examined whether blogging was hazardous to your health and followed it up taking a look at whether or not blogging was good for your health.
As a blogger for a blog that encourages others to blog, I feel somewhat duty-bound to examine this question as well. I know that the last thing that Liz or I would ever want to do is contribute to a reader’s problem.
My take — blogging is a tool.
As a tool, it can be used for many business purposes:
- Marketing
- Public relations
- Community building
- Branding
- Communication
- Reputation management
If your blogging or the your use of the Internet ever gets to the point where it interferes with your relationships, your work, or your health — then it’s time find professional help.
What do you think? Is blogging/Internet addiction a real problem? If so, how serious is the problem?

Unfortunately, so many things can become addictive if not enjoyed in moderation, Internet use and blogging among them. You’re right, Laura: addiction of any kind certainly isn’t humorous. If you need help handling addiction of any kind, a treatment program like The Canyon can help.
