New Blog Site For Contract Workers

by Des Walsh on December 1st, 2006

I’m no expert in workplace change but I’ve seen a lot of it since I left high school all those years ago and went to work, briefly, in an insurance company. And as an indication that the culture of rapid change had not arrived at that time, I recall vividly that when I was leaving the insurance company after just six months, the Chief Accountant gave me an avuncular warning about my action. He said, and this was well before a certain band arrived on the scene, “You could become a rolling stone”. Not a good thing in those days, to be called a rolling stone – i.e. Shiftless, restless, unreliable, definitely not a prospective company man.

Of course, later on, with technological and other changes, a lot of the good company men and women who worked diligently for that company would presumably have been shown the door by Chief Accountants and other senior honchos, not realizing at first that they could well be next as the juggernaut of change and rationalization rolled on.

By the way, the Chief Accountant was partly right and I’ve had more changes than Clark Kent. He was also partly wrong, fortunately, in the inference he wanted me to draw of what we would now call a bad career move. My love of change hasn’t hurt me, actually prepared me well for the 21st century. I still love change and new challenges – otherwise, for one thing, I wouldn’t be writing this blog.

And of course change is now the norm, not the exception, and more and more people are working as freelancers, contract workers, work from home professionals or road warriors for whoever is paying their fees and/or commissions this month.

The Future of Work weblog is just one site that’s dedicated to capturing and sharing information about this relatively new global phenomenon.

And along with the theorists and observers writing about the new way of working, there is a new voice from the trenches, so to speak, by a freelancer. Rico Mossesgeld’s ContractWorker is one of the new blogs in the burgeoning business channel at our b5media network.
