Would You Join … The Blog Council?

(businessandblogging.com) I had been seeing references to the Blog Council on quite a few posts, but this post from Duncan Riley of TechCrunch pulled it all together for me and helped me understand what it’s all about. The Blog Council has their own site, so you can form your own opinion.

According to the Blog Council’s own site, the organization is “… dedicated to promoting best practices in corporate blogging …”

This is not some minor effort. The initial members of this council are corporate heavy hitters:

For your convenience, I’ve linked to at least one of each company’s blogs (where I could find them) so that you can see how they are doing.

(Business blogging pointer: your clients should be able to find your blog. For more information on large corporations that blog and those that don’t, see Liz’s post from yesterday.)

By the way, I’ll be talking a little bit more about Dell’s blog in Thursday’s post.

I can see some good coming from the Blog Council idea - corporate bloggers will now have a chance to network with and learn from each other.

I also see a danger. If the Blog Council causes companies to shift their blogging focus from communication with customers to impressing or networking with each other, then the Blog Council could defeat the very purpose of business blogging.

Is the Blog Council going to be a great boon for corporate bloggers, or a great obstacle? It remains to be seen.

What do you think about this idea? Would you join the Blog Council? Why, or why not?

I was interested in the idea at first but when I explored it late last year I quickly discovered it was too expensive to consider. While this idea probably has merit, it needs to be developed in such a manner that anyone can join, regardless of how much money they have access to for a membership fee.

    Hi Joe!

I think opening the council up to smaller and medium size organizations would be a good move. It could keep the council from getting too ingrown and at the same time provide real assistance for smaller businesses that are trying to start blogging.

I dont see the point, really. Why should companies want to share knowledge with others, especially potential competitors…?!

Hi Tobe - Actually, I’m afraid that there are a lot of people out there who feel exactly the way that you do. Of course, blogging information is widely available - it’s not proprietary or competitive. By cooperating, the corporations are able to gather it efficiently and make the best use of it. By working as a team instead of as individual entities, they save both time and money.
